THE GREAT FISH DAY !

A Renowned Family Festival

 

For the sixteenth time people are invited to the Annual Buffet in Dalvík, a festival well known to all Icelanders. The Great Fish Day is a festival in a category of its own. It always takes place in the beginning of August and the buffet and the whole entertainment program is by courtesy of seafood companies as well as other various companies. In recent years, up to 25- 30.000 guests have visited the festival area at the Dalvík Harbour. Various entertainment is on offer between 11 o’clock in the morning and 5 o’clock in the afternoon, both on stage and at various sites around the festival area.

 

The Friendship Chain and the Fish Soup

 

The Friendship Chain is something that always marks the beginning of the Great Fish Day and the chain will come together in front of the church at 18 o’clock on Friday, the 6th of August. Various artists will perform, such as Blítt og Létt from Westmann Islands, Friðrik Ómar and Gyða Jóhannesdóttir as well as members of the men´s choir and pre-school children in Dalvíkurbyggd. The newly elected president, Mr. Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, will give a speech, a new building at the local pre-school will be inaugurated, flags for the children and postcards of friendship and friendship bracelets will be distributed. Finally, at the end of the program, all the people are encouraged to hug as many as possible, setting an example of the friendly atmosphere everybody longs for at this festival.

 

The Fish Soup Night. The Fish Soup Night has been a success, now taking place for the 12th time in a row. Even more families participate this year and offer guests to enjoy their fish soup and renowned hospitality.

 

Program on Stage between 11:00 and 17:00

 

A variety of entertainers will perform on stage on the actual Great Fish Day, between 11:00 and 17:00. The food stations open punctually at 11:00 and the festival begins.

 

The Menu: Variety of dishes

The Great Fish Day’s menu has never been more diverse. Regular guests can be assured of that they still can taste the good old rye bread and herring, dried fish, the fresh shrimps and the famous fish burgers.

New dishes are for instance a graved Arctic charr, by Friðrik V, the head chef; a tandoori Arctic charr with naan bread, made by the Indian Curry Hut in Akureyri; Akureyri FISH and Reykjavík FISH will offer fish and chips. There will be a special food station where you can taste the famous shrimp salad of Dögun.  The NINGS family will be there with their giant soup pot, serving an Oriental shrimp and Arctic charr soup; Chef Grímur will serve his gluten, milk and egg free fish balls and a special OMEGA 3 vegetarian dish. The festival’s sous chef, Addi Yellow, is in charge of the sashimi food station, where guests can both taste Arctic charr and Minke whale.  Sæplast, in cooperation with Greifinn, Ektafiskur and The Great Fish Day, will make the largest pizzas in Iceland. Each pizza will be 120 inches. Kaffibrennslan makes sure that everyone can get their cup of coffee; Samhentir Umbúðamiðlun hands out ice cream sticks and Samherji has sweets to offer.   

 

Entertainment at the Festival Area

 

Guests are entertained, not only by the program on stage but also by various entertainment acts all around the festival area. What guests can expect to see are for instance: kayaks, old cars, football and pin ball, a dance group, BMX bikers, a photo exhibition, a theatre group, a puppet play, a fish exhibition and a demonstration of shark cutting.

 

An Evening Concert and a Fireworks display, sponsored by Samherji

The big evening concert, on Saturday night, is a cooperation of Samherji, Rigg Events, The Great Fish Day, Exton and others. Nearly fifty technicians, singers and musicians participate in this huge event. Among the many artists, guests can expect to see, are: the local boys Friðrik Ómar, Matti Matt and Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson, Salka Sól, Laddi, Jóhanna Guðrún, Stefán Jakobsson, Dagur Sigurðsson, Gissur Páll Gissurarson, Selma Björns, Regína Ósk, Dalvík men’s choir, Salka women’s choir, Helena Eyjólfsdóttir, Hulda Björk Garðarsdóttir, KK, BMX bikers and the Rigg Event band. The night is brought to a closure by a spectacular Fireworks display, supervised by the Dalvík Rescue Squad. The Fireworks display is sponsored by Samherji.

We, the organizers behind the Great Fish Day, sincerely hope that everyone will have a good time, they will enjoy their food and the various entertainment on offer. We also hope that people can create fond memories with their families and friends. The Great Fish Day is a festival dedicated to families. There is no room for drugs or drunken disorder and the organizers plead to guests to lay off alcoholic beverages during the Great Fish Day’s events, and especially between 11:00 and 17:00. During all our festivals, guests have behaved very well and for that we are extremely thankful.
